Wondering what to wear to Pilates? Start with stretchy leggings or fitted shorts, a top that stays put and a sports bra that feels comfortable. For reformer or mat class, check your studio's sock policy before you leave.

For your first class

Use an outfit you can sit, bend and reach in comfortably. Most classes are done without shoes; some studios require grip socks. Check the booking instructions before buying a new set.

What to wear to Pilates for your first class

Start with the activewear you already own. Leggings or fitted bike shorts, a top that stays in place when you lean forward, and a comfortable sports bra are a useful starting outfit. You do not need a matching set or a cropped top.

VAURA's clothing guide recommends flexible, fitted clothing and makes its own grip-sock requirement clear. Your booking email is the place to check your studio's rules.

  • Try sitting and reaching in the outfit before you pack it. If you keep pulling at the waistband or neckline, try another piece.
  • Bring water and any socks or towel requested by the studio.
  • Check whether a mat is provided before carrying your own to class.

What to wear to reformer Pilates, and what changes for mat class

On a reformer, keep loose fabric and long ties away from the equipment. Club Pilates Australia recommends a comfortable, close fit and advises against loose drawstrings, tiebacks and bulky zips.

Two class types, a similar outfit
Class Clothing to start with Check before leaving
Reformer Fitted leggings or bike shorts and a close-fitting tee or tank. The grip-sock rule, plus any loose ties or hard hardware on your outfit.
Mat Stretchy bottoms and a top that feels comfortable while lying on the mat. Whether bare feet are allowed and whether you need your own mat.

A longline top is fine if you prefer more coverage. Fitted should still leave you comfortable breathing, sitting and bending.

Do you wear shoes or socks to Pilates?

Most Pilates classes take place without trainers. Wear your shoes to the studio, then follow its instructions for class. Grip socks have textured soles; ordinary smooth socks are not a substitute when grip socks are required.

Rules vary. Club Pilates requires grip socks, while Aligné Studio's mat and reformer guide allows bare feet or grip socks. Check before buying anything, especially if your booking is for a mixed-format class.

Choose the waistband before the colour

For a Lociónne outfit, the useful comparison is between two actual cuts. These details come from the named product pages, not a claim that either pair has been tested through a Pilates class.

Phantom Pocket and Wrap Pocket: the listed differences
Legging Waistband Inseam
Phantom Pocket in Carbon Elastic-free, tapered high waistband 26 inches, about 66 cm
Wrap Pocket in Amalfi Blue V-shaped wrap waistband 25 inches, about 63.5 cm

Both list side pockets and no front seam. The one-inch difference is 2.54 cm: measure the inside leg of a pair you already like before choosing. Neither inseam tells you exactly where the hem will sit on your body.

Prefer a straight front? Start with Phantom. Prefer the crossover shape? Look at Wrap. Our Phantom Pocket versus Wrap Pocket comparison goes further into the two cuts.

Choose a bra you feel settled in

The Sculpt Bralette in Carbon has thin straps, a bandeau-style cut, removable cups and no underwire. Its product description is for everyday wear and light-impact activity. That does not tell you how much support it will provide for your body.

Try reaching overhead and leaning forward. Check the band, straps and coverage together; a familiar sports bra is a sensible choice for a first class. For another neckline or strap arrangement, browse the sports bra collection.

Choose your size from the chart linked on the specific product. If your measurements fall outside it, ask for garment measurements rather than sizing down to make a set match. Check the available size in each colour before choosing the top and bottom together.

A few first-class clothing questions

Is there a dress code for Pilates?

Studios set their own clothing and sock rules. Comfortable activewear that allows movement is the starting point; your booking confirmation takes priority over an outfit you have seen online.

Can I wear shorts to Pilates?

Yes. Fitted bike shorts are an option if you prefer them to leggings. Sit and bend in them first to check the coverage you want; loose shorts can shift as you change position.

What should men wear to Pilates?

A fitted tee or tank with stretchy shorts, leggings or tapered exercise trousers is a practical starting point. Check the same sock and hardware rules. The Lociónne products compared above are from the women's range.

What should I look for in plus-size Pilates clothing?

Start with your measurements, comfortable movement and the coverage you prefer. Check the brand's actual size chart instead of assuming an XL label means the same fit everywhere. A waistband that digs in or straps you keep adjusting are reasons to try a different fit.
